The game of roullete is one that requires a good understanding of odds and payouts. Players wager on a number or group of numbers on the table map and win if their prediction is correct.
A croupier spins a wheel with compartments that are painted alternately red and black and numbered from 1 to 36 (on American roulette wheels there are also two green pockets that carry the signs 0 and 00). A ball then lands in one of these sectors.
Origins
The origins of roullete are not exactly clear, but it is generally believed that the game emerged in 17th century France. Its development is based on several older gambling games, including portique, hoca, bassette and roly poly, as well as an Italian game called Biribi.
It is thought that the first roulette wheel was conceived by French mathematician Blaise Pascal in 1655. He invented it as part of his quest to create a perpetual motion machine.
It is also a popular belief that roulette originated in ancient China and Greece. However, there is not enough evidence to support this claim. It is more likely that a game that shared some similarities with the modern European-style Roulette wheel evolved from a game called roly poly and even-odd, which were played by Roman soldiers.
Variations
Roulette is a fascinating game that offers many different variations. The main difference is in the make-up of the wheel. European Roulette contains 38 pockets and a single zero, making it easier to play and offering better odds for winning. Other differences are in payouts and betting options. While most gamblers are interested in house edge, expected value, and odds, they also seek a pleasant experience – and variation is an important part of this experience.
