Origins
The origins of roulette are not entirely clear. Various theories exist, ranging from the fanciful to the downright absurd. Some claim that it was invented by the 17th century French mathematician and physicist Blaise Pascal as part of his efforts to create a perpetual motion machine. Others believe that it originated in China and was brought to Europe by Dominican monks. The game was then developed into its modern form by the French. Regardless of its origins, it is clear that the game has long been played using a wheel. Gambling on wheels dates back as far as the ancient Romans, who turned their chariot wheels on their side and spun shields balanced on their points. The modern roulette wheel was introduced in the 18th century and is based on earlier French games such as hoca and portique.
